Tokyo (Reuters) – Nissan Motor Co Ltd on Tuesday said it will sell a redesigned version of its best-selling Note compact car in Japan from December featuring new hybrid drive technology, to win market share from Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd.

The Note’s first full model change in eight years is part of a plan by the carmaker to revamp an aging vehicle line up and return to profitability as it pulls back from the expansion pursued by former Chairman Carlos Ghosn to focus on sales in Japan, China and the United States.

The Note will feature “e-Power” hybrid technology, which uses a gasoline engine to charge a battery that powers the vehicle. New autonomous drive functions will help drivers slow down on curves using data from the car’s navigation system.

Nissan, which expects to post a record operating loss of 340 billion yen ($3.25 billion) in the year to March 31, is cutting production capacity and model numbers by a fifth and aims to slash operating expenses by 300 billion yen over three years.

At the same time, it has promised to launch a slew of vehicles in Japan, China and the United States, including new electric vehicles to lure increasingly environment-conscious drivers.

In Japan, the Note, which uses a platform designed with French alliance partner Renault SA, will compete With Toyota’s Yaris and Honda’s Fit. A Nissan spokeswoman said the automaker has not made any decision on selling the redesigned vehicle in other markets.

That leased car gathering dust in your driveway might have hidden cash in it.

Dealers facing tight inventories are scrambling to buy good used cars to resell. They might be willing to purchase your leased car for more than the buyout price in your contract.

“I haven’t seen used car prices go up this much in years,” says Oren Weintraub, president of car concierge service Authority Auto. “We are seeing a large percentage or leases with equity in them.”

With the pandemic reshaping the car business, experts recommend extracting that equity by selling the car outright, using it to offset the cost of returning the car or leveraging that value to make a better deal on your next car.

Where does the equity come from?

Your lease payment is based on the residual value of your vehicle. This is a prediction of the car’s value at the end of the lease which, because of the pandemic, is now often too low.

This means you might be able to arrange to sell the car for the higher price, pay off the lease and then pocket the difference. It also means you could dodge over-mileage penalties or end the lease early.

For example, Scot Hall of the lease-trading site Swapalease said his wife has been working from home during the pandemic and decided she didn’t need her leased 2017 GMC Yukon Denali XL. She ended her lease six months early — saving the remaining monthly payments — and sold her SUV to a local dealer, pocketing a check for $2,500.

Know where you stand

Here’s how to know if you have equity in your leased car:

Find the residual value in your lease contract. This is the amount you can buy the car for at the end of the lease (there might also be a disposition fee for this transaction).

Get today’s buyout price. If you want to end your lease early, call the lease holder and ask for a current buyout price. Hall says you can usually estimate this price by simply adding the total of all the remaining payments to the residual value.

Look up the current market value. Use an online pricing guide, such as Edmunds.com, to find the trade-in value of your car, factoring in the current mileage, options and condition. If you’re thinking of selling your car to a neighbor, look for the private party price. Or you can get a nearly instant cash offer from a local dealer, Carmax or an online car retailer such as Carvana, Shift or Vroom. Give real-world offers more weight in your calculations.

Do the math. Subtract the residual value from the current market price or cash offer. This is an estimate of how much equity you have in the car and how much money you could make on the deal.

Find opportunity in a volatile market

Once you know if you are in a positive equity position, you can explore different ways to use this potential value. Here are options

  • Uber is in talks to sell its self-driving vehicle division, ATG, to autonomous vehicle startup Aurora, TechCrunch reported Friday.
  • ATG has been hobbled by a deadly crash, infighting, and unreliable tech — leading investors to lose patience and sparking rumors the company would try to offload the struggling unit.
  • Despite a previous $7.25 billion valuation, ATG was facing an upcoming investment round that would have valued it at less than that, according to TechCrunch, as Uber has doubled down on its core ride-hailing and food delivery businesses during the pandemic.
  • Aurora, a major player in the AV world, is headed up by former leaders of AV initiatives at Uber, Google, and Tesla.

Uber is looking to get rid of its self-driving vehicle division, Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), and AV startup Aurora Innovation is a likely candidate to acquire it, TechCrunch reported Friday.

Sources told TechCrunch that Uber “has been shopping” ATG to multiple potential buyers including some automakers, but that talks with Aurora, which began in October, are far along.

“We don’t comment on rumor or speculation,” an Aurora spokesperson told Business Insider, while Uber did not respond to a request for comment.

Despite ambitious goals, ATG has long struggled to make significant progress toward a fully-autonomous vehicle that can safely and efficiently move passengers and goods, while losing money along the way — leading to speculation in recent months that Uber would look to offload the struggling business unit.

According to TechCrunch, ATG was facing a possible “down round,” where investors were considering dropping the division’s valuation from its previous $7.25 billion valuation.

ATG’s struggles

Uber launched ATG five years ago, and in its short life, the division has been plagued by multiple scandals and setbacks, bleeding money along the way — Uber reported $303 million in net losses for “ATG and other technologies” in its third quarter.

Employees told Business Insider’s Julie Bort a deadly 2018 crash in Phoenix — the first AV incident to kill a pedestrian —  exposed flaws in ATG’s technology as well as poor decision-making and infighting. (Uber was found not criminally liable for the incident, while the human back-up driver was charged with negligent homicide).

The former head of Uber’s self-driving division, Anthony Levandowski, was also at the center of a massive legal fight between Uber and Google’s self-driving group, now called Waymo, over stolen technology. Uber fired Levandowski, who was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison for trade secret theft, in 2017 after he refused to testify in the case.
