Utica, N.Y. — Utica police say a man was shot inside a vehicle that later crashed Sunday evening.

At about 5:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Genesee Street for a motor vehicle accident. Around the same time, police also were called to reports of shots fired nearby, in the 100 block of Grant Street.

When the officers arrived at the scene of the crash on Genesee Street, they found a man inside the vehicle had been shot. They immediately knew the vehicle was somehow involved in the shooting investigation on Grant Street, police said.

The Utica Fire Department transported the shooting victim to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, where he was in critical condition.

“Once at the hospital, the staff there conducted life saving measures,” Utica police said in a news release.

The shooting victim died from his injuries, police said.

Utica police say they are continuing to investigate the homicide and more information will be released as it becomes available.
