How to Get around New York City

As you’ll see from this list you have a lot of options when it comes to getting around New York City. This is to be expected, after all, New York is the most populated city in the United States.

With over twenty million residents in the New York metropolitan area, which is spread across five main boroughs, it’s easy to see why there are so many ways to help them get around!

Here are some of the best ways to get around the city when you visit.

1. Taxi

The iconic yellow taxi is certainly a popular way to get around the city with residents and visitors alike. The yellow taxi is easy to recognise, being bright yellow, and having a yellow light on the roof. These yellow taxis are the only vehicles that are allowed to pick passengers up in response to a street hail across the entire city.

How to get around New York Transport

A taxi shows it’s availability by illuminating the yellow light. An illuminated light means the taxi is available for hire. To hail a taxi, you just need to attract the drivers attention, usually by waving from the street corner.

Once the taxi sees you, they will stop somewhere safe to pick you up. Let the driver know your destination address. Taxis are metered, with fares starting at $3, and then increasing as time and distance pass – you can see the fares here. Note that tolls will also be added to your taxi fare. New York taxi Fares can be paid in cash, or with a credit or debit card.

It’s definitely worth taking a taxi in New York just for the experience. It’s not a big expense, particularly for shorter rides.

The bolt pattern, lug pattern, or bolt circle is the diameter of an imaginary circle formed by the centers of the wheel lugs. Bolt patterns can be 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug holes. A bolt circle of 4×100 would indicate a 4 lug pattern on a circle with a diameter of 100mm. The bolt pattern is comprised
	of two numbers – the first indicates how many bolt holes are on the wheel, and the other describes how far apart they are. A bolt pattern of 5-115mm would mean the wheel has five bolt holes and they are 115mm apart (measured across the center of the wheel). Dual Bolt Pattern: More and more manufacturers are building their wheels with two bolt patterns. This expands the number of fitments the wheel applies to. For example: a wheel with a 4-100/114.3 bolt pattern has 8 lug holes and will fit both 4-100mm and 4-114.3mm fitments.
Measuring a 5-bolt pattern: A 5-bolt pattern is very difficult to measure without using a bolt pattern gauge. Basically, you would measure the diameter of a circle that crosses through the center of the lug holes. This method is not recommended to confirm wheel fitment. Please use the below as a reference only.

Wheel Offsets

The offset of a wheel is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the true centerline of the rim. A positive offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is positioned in front of the true centerline of the rim / tire assembly. This in effect brings the tire in to the fender well more. Conversely, a negative offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is behind the true centerline of the rim / tire assembly. This will cause the tire to stick out away from the vehicle.

H = High Positive or FWD (Front Wheel Drive) typically +45,40,35 offsets

M = Medium Offset or RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) Typically +20 offset

L = Low Offset or RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) Typically 0 offset

Plus Sizing

Plus sizing your wheel & tire combination was designed to enhance vehicle performance and looks by allowing fitment of larger diameter rims and lower profile tires. The theory is that while making these changes, you keep the overall tire diameter within 3% of the original equipment tires. This is important because larger variances can cause problems with transmission shift points which can decrease fuel mileage. It can also confuse braking system computers which can even lead to brake failure.

Here’s the rule of thumb for “plus sizing”:

Plus 1:
Increase section width by 10mm
Decrease aspect ratio by 10 points
Increase rim diameter by 1 inch
Plus 2:
Increase section width by 20mm
Decrease aspect ratio by 20 points
Increase rim diameter by 2 inches.

I had always been a bike purist. Up until recently, I’ve been riding the same bike I got for my 10th birthday. Sure, it still got me where I needed to go, but it was definitely time for an upgrade. As a total beginner, I discovered picking the right bike isn’t as simple as I thought. From frame size to extra features, here’s how to find your perfect ride.

Choose the right bike type based on your needs

When I walked into my local bike shop and they asked what I was looking for, I had no idea what to say beyond, “a really cool bike.” I didn’t know where to start, so I told them I just wanted something for riding around the neighborhood. Even then, I discovered there were options.

The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) lists the general types of bikes you can find at most stores here. You probably know the difference between a mountain bike and a cruiser (pictured above), but there are a few types in between. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Mountain bikes: Rugged and meant for off-road use, but you can use them on pavement, too.
Road bikes: Meant for pavement use, like riding around in the city. Built for speed.
Hybrid bikes: A cross between mountain and road bikes. Not as fast as road bikes, and not as rugged as mountain bikes, but good for commuting.
Cruisers: Casual bike for, you know, cruising. The kind of bikes you see people ride around boardwalks near the beach.

Of course, there are all sorts of additional, specific types of bikes: tandem bikes, BMX bikes, fixed-gear bikes. But for us beginners, these four are a good place to start. I wanted a good transportation bike, but maybe even one I could take on nearby trails, so the salesman suggested a hybrid.

Calculate how much you want to spend

It goes without saying that bikes can be expensive. Those prices range quite a bit, though, from a hundred bucks to several thousand depending on what you buy. Ebicycles.com says beginners can expect to at least spend a few hundred bucks, and CostHelper breaks down the price points (emphasis ours🙂

The low range is $80 to $300. Usually these basic metal frames are just functional, though often still stylish. Target sells low-range models by numerous brands, including Huffy and Forge.

Mid-range bikes cost $300 to $1,000. These aluminum or lighter metal bikes are the best bet for everyday riders because their higher-quality wheels, chains and pedals increase their durability.

High-end bikes cost $1,000 and higher. These models are usually made of the lightest metals, including carbon and titanium, and are designed for more rigorous, everyday use or light competition. Riders can build their own model in a store or online by choosing from several different

Set a Budget

Before you can start used car shopping, you should figure out your budget. This will help your process in many respects—including setting the right expectation for the types of used vehicles you can purchase.

There are a few key factors to keep in mind while you’re number crunching.

Personal Budget Factors

It’s very important to have a realistic idea not only of what you can spend, but also of what you should spend on a used car. Just because you can afford it doesn’t mean it’s a good option for you.

It’s generally suggested to spend no more than 20% of your monthly take-home pay on a monthly auto payment. However, this is just a broad recommendation and may not apply to every circumstance.

Keep all your other monthly expenses in mind, such as:

Rent or mortgage.
Utilities.
Groceries.
Phone and Internet bills.
Student loans/other debts.

If your monthly budget is mostly spent after taking care of necessary bills, it may be more prudent to keep your car payments on the lower side.

Well, hold on.

I’ve been riding bikes for years, mainly mountain-, hybrid- and road bikes. I know the advantages and disadvantages of every type. Also quite a lot of different brands. I started to give advice to my friends and now I’m here. Bike reviews on this page have helped over 5,000 people choose bikes according to their likes and dislike!

I used to race, but now I’ve given that up just to teach riders how to become better at competing and racing.

So, let’s get started. This guide on bikes is about 1,500 words long (5 minutes read). So take a deep breath, grab something to drink and let’s start.

So, I have just made the starting point. Better late than never! So, without further ado, let’s jump onto step 1.

Step #1 – Choose The Right Bike Type

Begin with the basic question and analyze, What kind of person am I? Do I need speed? Or just adventure? Or adrenaline? Do I prefer nature or asphalt and tarmac more often?

Long story short, let’s talk about three main bike types which show what type of bike to choose.

Mountain Bike – Meant for riding in basically everywhere. When one drives in asphalt, it’s nice, it’s a good ride. The fun part starts when I turn to forest route. Mountain bikes have wider knobby tires which give the rider a good control on bikes on every situation. They usually have 20 to 27 gears and it doesn’t really matter how many gears there are overall.
Cheap bikes tend to have more gears but this does not matter on the performance. Then there are hard-tail and full-suspension bikes on the market as well. First with front forks and second with dual-suspension. The riding position is quite upstanding and comfortable.
Road Bikes – This is something for speed junkies. I can go extra fast on roads, also I can discover a bigger area with shorter times. Because of narrow tires, they roll faster. The riding position is lower and not so comfortable as it is on the mountain bike. They have 16-27 gears typically.
