Girl

Abakaliki — A young girl(names withheld) was, last weekend, raped by a middle-aged man, Emeka Chukwuani, at the popular Fatilami Park, Onwe Road, Abakaliki, as she was returning home around 8p.m.

It was gathered that the suspect, who is from Agwu, Enugu State, snatched the girl’s phone and ran into Fatilami Park, luring his victim into the isolated park, as those running the affairs of the place had long closed for the day.

Oblivious of the clandestine motive of the suspect, the girl ran after him into the Park to recover her phone. She ended up being beaten and raped by the suspect.

In a statement by Mr. Sampson Oko Nweke, the State Chairman of Human Rights Defender, HURIDE, the suspect was apprehended by the Police after the NGO and the victim’s sister raised the alarm over the incident.

According to him: “On Saturday, November 28, between 8:30p.m. and 9p.m., HURIDE got a distress call, reporting that someone(a young girl) was being raped at Fatilami Park, Abakaliki.

“Immediately, we made phone calls and the alleged rapist was arrested by the Police as he was already fleeing.

“His name is Emeka Chukwuani, a married man from Awgu, Enugu State. He sells bicycles somewhere along Ezza Road, Abakaliki.

“When we got to the crime scene, it was so horrible. We saw the wailing victim with bruises and wounds all over her body with multiple bites.

“She received a serious hit on the mouth which left all her front teeth shaky. There was blood everywhere.”

Narrating her ordeal, the young girl said: “I was going home with my younger sister around 8p.m., when we saw this man on the way.

“He stopped and wanted to talk to us, but we continued to move. He followed us and snatched my phone and ran into Fatilami Park.

“We ran after him to give us our phone. Immediately we got to the photo stand, he grabbed my neck and we began to struggle.

“As we struggled, he was biting me everywhere including my ear, my cheek, my shoulder, my back and somewhere close to my private part.

“My sister was shouting but nobody was there to help us. When my sister was trying to draw him away from my body, he broke a bottle on her head and she ran outside crying, while I was shouting inside.

“It was when he hit my mouth with the bottle that I became somehow unconscious and I woke up later to discover that he had raped me.

“I was surprised when I heard gunshots and two persons came inside. He tried to run away but they apprehended him. That was when I realised they were police officers. They saved me and my sister.”

File photo: Indiana police officers in Lake County respond to a road accident as a 13-year-old girl dies when the car she was travelling in left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Kelly Hume was traveling in the car driven by her older sister when the vehicle left the roadway in Crown Point, Lake County city, on Saturday night.

The teenager was thrown from the car at about 8 p.m. in the 4500 block of West 113th Avenue in the single-car accident, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, having died from blunt force trauma, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.

An investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit, as cited by The Times, found Hume was leaning out the window of a car driven by her 18-year-old sister when the vehicle left the road on a steep incline.

The 13-year-old struck a utility pole and was dragged and thrown from the car, investigators said.

Authorities are investigating if cellphone use may have been a factor in the accident and other circumstances surrounding the fatality, including possible negligence, also remain under investigation.

“The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit is conducting traffic reconstruction of this incident, and the investigation continues,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this extremely difficult time.”

Crown Point police and fire crews and the Lake County coroner assisted at the scene.

Newsweek has contacted the Crown Point Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department for comment.

On November 12, Newsweek reported how a high school senior lost both her legs in a head-on car crash in Utah.

Sarah Frei, 17, had just finished junior year at Clearfield High School when she was invited to spend the weekend at a friend’s cabin in Bear Lake.

The trip was ending on July 30 when the friends began to drive back home after dinner through the Logan Canyon.

Sarah said she was in the back passenger seat and wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred.

“I don’t actually remember what happened next with the accident or a couple of weeks afterwards, but I have been told since that we were driving through and an alleged drunk driver came from the opposite direction and hit the car head on,” she explained.

“We were in the canyon with no cell service for an hour and all four of us were injured, but my injuries were the most extreme.”

Some passersby stopped to help before emergency services arrived and took her to Logan Regional Hospital before deciding to take her by Life Flight to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Sarah was left paralyzed and doctors were forced to amputate both of her legs.

A

mangled bicycle with just one wheel that formed part of a cherished Banksy artwork has gone missing.

The piece, installed near a beauty salon in Nottingham in October, shows a girl hula-hooping with a bicycle tyre.

In front of her, a broken bike with a missing back wheel is chained to a lampost with an infinity lock, in a nod to the old Raleigh factory nearby.

But residents were shocked to discover this weekend that the bike was missing.

It has already been targeted by other graffiti artists at least twice, prompting the council to install a protective plastic covering over the girl.

Resident Tracy Jayne found the artwork had been targeted when she went to visit it on Sunday morning.

She told The Guardian: “It’s a shame if someone has taken it and chosen to be that disrespectful, not just to Banksy himself but to the whole of Nottingham.”

Her late husband worked for bicycle maker Raleigh, one of the largest companies in Nottingham until it closed in 2002 – meaning she had an emotional connection to the work.

Louise Harrison, who was visiting the spot, told the Nottingham Post: “I just think it’s sad someone would do that.

“I feel like Banksy has given us a gift when we were at a low with increasing infection rates.

“The missing bike does take away from it.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham City Council said the removal of the bike had not been reported to them.

An investigation is underway after a two-year-old girl was found dead in a vehicle at a rest stop in New Hampshire on Monday.

Police responded to the RMZ Truck Stop on Rockingham Road, off Interstate 93, in Londonderry at around 9.45 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report of an unconscious child in a vehicle.

A day shift patrol sergeant was nearby and arrived at the scene within a minute. He located the toddler in a vehicle parked in the truck stop’s rear parking lot, Londonderry police Capt. Patrick Cheetham said.

The sergeant immediately began CPR on the girl until paramedics arrived at the scene. However, the child was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital, Cheetham said.

The Londonderry Police Department is investigating the girl’s death, which is being described as suspicious.

Danny Patel, who works at the rest stop, told WHDH that his security cameras do not show the area where the child was found.

Bob Patel, another employee, said police officers came inside the gas station to watch security footage. “I’m just working here and just my register we’re watching a lot of police cars and like three ambulances, that’s it,” he told Boston 25 News.

“They only watched the cameras, they didn’t ask any questions, watched the cameras and left.”

An autopsy was performed Tuesday by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the girl’s cause of death, but the results remain pending.

Cheetham added that the identity of the child, and those involved in the incident, are being withheld until the girl’s family members have been notified.

The Londonderry Police Department and the medical examiner’s office have been contacted for additional comment.

According to a 2018 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the leading causes of child and adolescent death in the U.S. were injury-related.

The study’s researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization on the 20,360 child and adolescent deaths in the country in 2016.

They found that motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of child deaths in the U.S., comprising about 20 percent of all deaths among children in 2016, followed by firearms.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Det. Sgt. Daniel Hurley at [email protected] or 603-425-5922.

I didn’t know Bonita Carter.

When I moved to Birmingham from New York in 2014, I—like too many others, who aren’t from ’round here—had never heard the young woman’s name. Never heard her story. Never heard of her tragic death and how it inalterably changed this city.

Though as I came to know her, as I began to research her life and death, after being asked to co-host “Unjustifiable”, a podcast on her journey with my Pulitzer prize-winning colleague John Archibald, I realized I knew her a lot better than I thought. I knew her, in fact, too well.

Because Bonita Carter was Sandra Bland. She was Korryn Gaines. She was Tanisha Anderson. She was Michelle Cusseaux. She was Charleena Lyles. Se was Duanna Johnson. She was India Kager. She was Rekia Boyd. She was Eleanor Bumpers. She was Shelly Frey.

She was Breonna Taylor.

She lived and died a generation before the more than 50 Black women killed by the police since 2014. In 1979, she was felled by bullets from the gun of Birmingham police officer George Sands. Killed for nothing more than being in the wrong place at the very wrong time.

Yet she is their spiritual sister. Bonita Carter. Say her name, too.

Bonita Carter

Bonita Carter was just 20 years old when she was shot and killed by a Birmingham police officer.

On June 22, 1979, Carter, then 20, and a few friends rode their bikes to Jerry’s convenience store in the Stockham-Kingston area in East Birmingham. Soon, a disturbance broke out inside, a dispute between the store clerk and a guy from the neighborhood Carter knew. The man left then returned with a gun, fired a threatening shot into the air then ran away, leaving his car behind, halfway out of the parking lot.

Amid the chaos, Sands and his partner just happened to be pulling up at Jerry’s. They were informed of a robbery in progress.

As a favor, Carter jumped in the driver’s seat of the neighborhood man’s car and attempted to drive it to his home. Sands ignored the loud voices in the crowd screaming there was a girl in the car, not the man police sought. He fired into the car, hitting Carter in the back, killing her.

Her death sparked outrage (sound familiar?) and ignited seismic change. Later that year, Birmingham elected the professorial City Councilman Richard Arrington as its first Black mayor, long before many here thought it would happen.

Carter’s murder also led to the dismantling of a police department with a history of shootings, shootings of Black people, that were almost always declared “justifiable.” Even if the victim was running away and unarmed.

Having grown up in and around Birmingham, John Archibald knew of Bonita Carter, knew her story. Or thought he did. The story he heard in his youth was that Carter was complicit, that she somehow did something wrong. That she must have.

I know that well, too. How the narratives on injustices perpetrated against

An Amber Alert has been issued for an 11-year-old girl thought to have been abducted by her non-custodial parents.

The Montana Department of Justice issued the alert for Adrianna Carreia on Monday.

The alert says the girl was last seen being dropped off in an alley by her school in Anaconda at around 8 a.m. on Monday, but she never arrived at class.

Video footage shows she entered a red vehicle driven by a man with short dark hair, according to the alert.

The alert adds the girl may have been taken by Justin Timothy Taylor, 30, and Amanda Carreia, 31—her non-custodial parents who live in Washington.

Both Taylor and Amanda Carreia also use the last name Gangi-Stamps, the alert says.

Adrianna Carreia is described as 5 feet and 2 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and gray eyes. She was last seen wearing a Griz sweatshirt, maroon sweatpants, purple boots and a red coat. She was also carrying shoes and a red backpack.

The Amber Alert System provides law enforcement nationwide the ability to notify the public of missing children who are believed to have been abducted.

According to the Montana DOJ’s website, there must be a reasonable belief that a child has been abducted or has disappeared under suspicious circumstances for an Amber Alert to be issued in the state.

The law enforcement agency must also believe the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death. The Amber Alert system is not used to track runaways, missing children or children involved in custody disputes, but restricted to child abduction cases that could be life-threatening.

Amber stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was murdered in January 1996 after being kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas.

It began after Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed up with local police to develop an early warning system to help locate abducted children. Other states and communities set up their plans and the idea was adopted across the U.S.
