Working with the team at Google, Radioplayer has been one of the first organizations to develop an Android Automotive version of its radio app, which will be recommended to drivers of vehicles sold in Canada and other Radioplayer countries via a ‘Playout Auto Install’ process. This status is only available to a handful of partner apps, pre-selected by Google.

The Radioplayer Android Automotive app features live stations and on-demand/podcast shows from thousands of broadcasters, offering recommendations, voice-search, and now-playing information.

The Polestar 2 will roll out across North America beginning in November. Google and Polestar are coordinating with Radioplayer Canada, to ensure they deliver the best possible radio experience in this innovative new infotainment system.

The development of Android Automotive-compatible versions of its mobile app is the first step for Radioplayer in ensuring hybrid capability (merging broadcast radio with online streams, logos, podcasts, and rich visuals) for all apps in Android Automotive.

Michael Hill, Radioplayer Managing Director Worldwide said, “We’re delighted to be supporting the launch of the Polestar 2. Radio has always been front-and-centre in car entertainment systems and our aim is to ensure that continues by developing smart radio interfaces which deliver the next-generation audio experiences that listeners expect. We will be developing Android Automotive capability which supports the merging of broadcast radio with online content, in a rich hybrid implementation. Radioplayer is proud to be leading this work on behalf of our thousands of international member stations.”

“We are delighted to deliver the world’s first car to feature Android Automotive OS from the factory,” said Hugues Bissonnette, Country Manager for Polestar. “In order to get the most from the system a driver can explore the App offering in Google play, and we are pleased to include Radioplayer Canada amongst the launch selection of Apps available.”

In an era of rapidly changing listener habits, Radioplayer Canada has expanded from being available on iOS, Android devices and online, to a growing number of streaming platforms and smart speaker devices, including Amazon Echo, Amazon Fire TV, Sonos, BOSE, Google Chromecast, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, among others. Radioplayer maintains a core focus on the in-car experience, with a growing number of automotive partnerships.

A select group of people will be able to destroy scrap cars in the U.K. as a form of “destruction therapy” all thanks to a new contest.

Scrap Car Comparison, an online service that helps people find the best cash offerings for their scrap or salvage vehicle, is launching a Rage Yard experience that will help contestants release their anger. The event is set to take place in the fields of Northamptonshire and will be partnered with tank-driving experience company Tanks-alot.

“The year 2020 has been one of the absolute worst in living memory, and we wanted to be able to offer customers a way to release all the stress that this year has brought into their lives. We thought as the year draws to a close, what better way to unleash all your 2020 angst than by taking it out on scrap cars,” said Scrap Car Comparison’s Managing Director Dan Gick in a statement sent to Fox News.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS INTRODUCE ‘RAGE ROOM’ FOR FANS TO LET OFF STEAM

“The cars are heading to the scrap heap anyway, so after the year we’ve all had, it made sense to offer this exhilarating experience that should help people let go of their built-up frustrations from 2020 and in turn, feel a bit more calm and serene as we enter the new year,” he added.

At the Rage Yard experience, participants will be allowed to shoot, set off explosives and drive a 61.7-ton armored tank over scrap cars that have the year 2020 spray-painted on.

SMASH YOUR ANGER AWAY IN THIS RAGE ROOM

This unconventional stress relief method Scrap Yard Comparison has received a stamp of approval from Chartered Psychologist Dr. Samia Latif.

“Certain individuals find that relieving tension in an overt physical manner is much more therapeutic and a form of stress relief that works better for them,” Latif shared in a statement. “This is known as ‘Destruction Therapy’ and it does allow people to relieve stress within a controlled environment.”

The Victorian government has proposed a new road usage tax for electric vehicles, mirroring moves in South Australia that some critics are saying could dissuade prospective buyers.

The tax would look to charge motorists 2.5c a kilometre for electric vehicles, while a 2c/km charge would be applied to plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Victoria’s treasurer, Tim Pallas, announced the new charges as part of the lead-up to the release of the state budget, saying he hoped the tax would create a “fairer system” for taxing road users.

But some critics have said the new tax flies in the face of the global movement towards zero emissions, and would potentially discourage people from taking up the new technology.

The Electric Vehicle Council’s chief executive, Behyad Jafari, told the Guardian the decision was “disastrous” and the government needed to rethink its approach.

“Australia is going to become the first country in the world to discourage people from buying electric vehicles by adding a new tax on to them.”

So, what are the arguments against this tax, and how do they stack up? We break it down for you.

Why do people think it’s a bad idea?

Simon Holmes à Court, a senior adviser to the Climate and Energy College at Melbourne University, said that although transport reforms were inevitable, this particular reform and its timing was a “terrible idea”.

“Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world with the electric vehicle transition.”

Electric vehicles have only 0.6% market share in Australia, according to the Global EV Outlook, compared with 2.6% globally and 4.9% in China.

Potential customers currently need to pay a luxury tax, a stamp duty and GST. Unlike in some countries, such as the US, there are no subsidies for electric vehicles in Australia.

“We already have a significant tax take on electric vehicles that we don’t see in other countries, which goes a long way to explaining why Australian uptake is so far behind the rest of the world.

“We disincentivise, rather than incentivise.”

With the addition of a usage tax, Holmes à Court said electric vehicles would become more expensive in Victoria.

“A lot of people are holding out until they can afford it, and by putting this extra tax on top Victoria has just kicked it further into the future.”

According to the NRMA, hybrid cars start at about $26,500, but pure electric vehicles start at around $47,500. Buying used is also a challenge due to the small number of electric vehicles on the road in Australia.

Do fuel excises really pay for our roads?

Pallas said in presenting the tax that the money made would be invested in improving roads. But some experts doubted that the tax would, whether directly or implicitly, go towards fixing roads.

“If fuel excise funded roads, we’d be driving on gold plated roads by now,” said Holmes à Court, explaining that fuel excise had not directly gone into roads since 1969.

Of all the wild truths that have emerged over the first 11 months of the year 2020, one of the few that sits closer to exhilarating than exasperating is that the flying car is just a few years away. That waiting time doesn’t seem so bad when you consider that this concept is nearly as old as the airplane itself, but we know that investors interested in this emerging space may not be the most patient of folk.

Nearly two years after being grounded following two crashes that killed a combined 346 people, Boeing’s 737 Max jet is back — sort of. This week, the FAA issued an airworthiness directive that overturns the order that has kept nearly 400 Max jets on the ground since March 2019. But like Rick Grimes waking up from a coma, the Max is returning to a very different world, in which airlines once desperate for the jet are reckoning with a pandemic that has devastated their businesses.

When most automotive execs talks about a shift to electric vehicles, they focus on how individual customers will feel about giving up on internal combustion: how much battery power they’ll need to avoid range anxiety, how and where they’ll charge their cars. Newly installed Ford CEO Jim Farley is fixated on something else: how to turn Ford’s latest electric, the E-Transit cargo van, into a big data behemoth that could bring home a significant chunk of a market that could soon be worth $750 billion.

When it comes to the news that both Pfizer and Moderna have developed vaccines promising protection against COVID-19, humanity as a whole is the big winner. But some people will see more benefits than others, especially those running the companies that will be charged with (and will charge for) distributing those vaccines. Motor and home insurer, Budget Direct, has acquired Chasing Cars, an automotive content and video platform.

Founded by Tom Baker in 2013, Chasing Cars also operates a YouTube channel providing independent, long-form reviews and comparisons of new cars available to Australian buyers and delivering over a million views every month. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Budget Direct’s latest ‘insurance solved’ campaign aligns with the acquisition of Chasing Cars, Auto & General chief marketing and delivery officer, Jonathan Kerr noted. “Chasing Cars is an obvious fit. We are thrilled to bring Chasing Cars into the Budget Direct family, adding ‘car reviews solved’ to our outstanding customer experience,” said Kerr.

“Chasing Cars is such a great platform for us to help our customers find and learn about their next car purchase, while retaining and enhancing the editorial independence of this first-rate car review source.”

Editor and founder of Chasing Cars, Tom Baker, will continue to lead the publication, which will remain independent, while Budget Direct will fund operations. The publication will not need to follow the traditional monetisation model observed in automotive media, where outlets typically advertise for the same models that they are reviewing, or otherwise generate revenue directly from car manufacturers.

“This transparent funding arrangement will make Chasing Cars the most independent automotive media platform in Australia, providing buyers with the confidence that they are not consuming content funded in whole or in part by revenue from car manufacturers,” Baker said.
