15yearold

A 15-year-old was arrested Tuesday in Essex County after police said they found him hiding in a driveway following a high-speed chase involving three cars.

The chase began about 1:35 a.m. when a police officer in Morris County saw three vehicles speeding through Harding Township, authorities said.

A Madison police officer chased the vehicles, but terminated the pursuit when the vehicles entered Chatham, police said. A Chatham police sergeant, waiting for the speeders in the area of Watchung and Hillside Avenues, then heard a crash, police said.

“He then observed two vehicles traveling side-by-side in both lanes of Watchung Avenue headed eastbound at a very high rate of speed,” Michael E. Bochniak, a police spokesman, said in a statement.

The sergeant found an unoccupied and heavily damaged vehicle at the intersection of Watchung and Fairmount avenues, Bochniak said, adding that the vehicle had been reported stolen from New York.

Bochniak said the sergeant found a teenager hiding under a van in the driveway of a home on Fairmount Avenue in Chatham.

The 15-year-old was charged with possession of stolen property and hindering apprehension. He was later released to his parents pending a court appearance.

Officers from several area police departments, a K-9 unit and a New Jersey State Police helicopter searched for other suspects but none were found, Bochniak said.
