It’s a 107-mile drive from Tijuana to Newport Beach.

That’s about 2½ hours without traffic. A round trip is about six hours. That was the commute that Renzzo Reyes, an AP Spanish teacher at Newport Harbor High School, made every day for three years until the pandemic shut down campuses in March.

But it’ll be at least a year before he can make that trip again.

Campuses in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have since reopened, but Reyes was in a serious car accident in Tijuana in October and broke several ribs, his clavicle, his scapula, his right wrist and one of his ribs perforated his right lung.

Reyes said doctors told him he should consider himself lucky because nothing serious had happened to his skull, legs or spine.

Reyes, who immigrated to the United States from Peru when he was 17, said he moved to Tijuana about three years ago to be closer to his family. His brother, Marco Reyes, had been living in Tijuana for a while and their mother, Doris Orozco, would come up from Peru to stay with him before eventually coming to stay with Renzzo Reyes in the U.S. before returning home.

Being in the city reminded Reyes of home, Lima, Peru.

“Everything, it reminds me what I left behind so many years ago and I still remember it because every year I will travel to Peru to see my mom and my aunts and all that, but I couldn’t fly to Peru whenever I wanted to,” said Reyes, adding that his 8-year-old twins, Bailey and Bryce, live with his ex-wife in Murrieta and that he wanted to be close enough to visit them every other weekend.

But, compared to Peru, Mexico was just two hours away.

“My brother was like, ‘Are you crazy? You can find a job here or in San Diego,’” Reyes said.

“But I love Newport Beach and Newport Harbor so much that I didn’t care about the driving hours. To be in my classroom with my students is the best thing ever,” Reyes said. “To see their smiles, their beautiful minds in action — even if they disagreed with me — that was a good, worthwhile sacrifice to be made.”

Even if it makes him tired, he said.

Reyes said he became a teacher after finding a love for Latin American literature while in college. He’d been studying theater before that and changed his major after reading the works of writers like Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel García-Márquez and Isabel Allende.

“I started reading a little bit about where I come from,” Reyes said. “I started understanding Latin American culture and little by little I started making sense of who I was as a cultural entity in the United States, living in a multicultural society in a

State officials released video Wednesday that partially captures a Clifton police vehicle hitting a woman who later died.

The footage was taken last month from the porch of a home near the accident. It captured audio of screeching brakes and a crashing sound, and shows the vehicle come to a sudden stop next to a house, lights still flashing.

Neither the driver, officer Garrell Middleton, or the 65-year-old pedestrian, who was not identified, are visible.

The state attorney general’s office is required to investigate every time somebody dies after an encounter with police. A grand jury will eventually review the case to decide if Middleton did anything wrong, but the pandemic has halted juries.

Officials regularly release video of police custody deaths during the investigation, but recent releases from Voorhees, Ventnor, Asbury Park and Trenton were all taken from body worn cameras.

Clifton is one of the majority of New Jersey departments that still do not have body cameras. The agency also does not have dashboard cameras, according to Clifton Det. Lt. Robert Bracken, although they are in the process of getting body cameras.

In an email, Bracken declined to comment on the accident.

Around 7:11 p.m. on Oct. 22, Middleton was driving to a “crime in progress,” officials previously said.

The woman was hit at the intersection of Allwood Road and Brookwood Road, according to a press release.

Middleton gave “medical aid” to the woman, officials said. Paramedics took her to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, and she was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m.

The footage released Wednesday was previously provided to a representative for the victim and her family, officials said.

Other video from that night exists, but the clip released was the only one that captured the incident, according to the press release.

The Department of Transportation has taken steps to ensure the rapid deployment of the soon-to-be-available coronavirus vaccines across the country.

Pfizer and Moderna have both submitted requests for emergency use authorization for their COVID-19 vaccines and while the FDA hasn’t approved the vaccines yet, the U.K. became the first to approve the vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech Wednesday.

Cartoons on the Coronavirus

Meanwhile, in the U.S., the Department of Transportation is preparing to ensure swift transport of a vaccine. In a press release on Tuesday, the department said “all of its necessary regulatory measures have been taken for the safe, rapid transportation of the coronavirus … vaccine by land and air,” adding that the department is prepared for the “immediate mass shipment” of the vaccine” following the “unprecedented pace of vaccine development through Operation warp Speed.”

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in the release that DOT has laid the groundwork for the shipment of the vaccines and “is proud to support this historic endeavor.”

DOT and Operation Warp Speed officials have been coordinating over the past several weeks with private companies that will ship the vaccines from manufacturing facilities to distribution centers and immunization sites, establishing all appropriate safety requirements for potential hazards, including dry ice and lithium batteries.

The department has been working since October to “support the safe and expedited transportation and distribution of approved COVID-19 vaccines,” according to the release. DOT formed the FAA COVID-19 Vaccine Air Transport Team and has been working to “ensure the safe transportation of hazardous materials.”

A COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech is expected to be approved in the U.S. in the coming weeks and be shipping to states beginning in mid-December.

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, MI — One person died and two others were injured Monday afternoon following a four-vehicle crash in northern Genesee County that police say was caused by distracted driving.

The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30 at the intersection of Vienna and Linden roads in Vienna Township, northwest of Flint.

One of the drivers involved was headed east on Vienna Road and set to make a left turn, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said during a Wednesday, Dec. 2 news conference.

A Chevrolet Equinox behind the vehicle stopped, but a third vehicle driven by a 51-year-old Detroit man rear ended the Equinox, pushing it into the westbound lane of traffic.

A fourth vehicle hit the Equinox, injuring a passenger, 74-year-old Clio resident Larry Haughton.

Haughton was pronounced deceased on the way to the hospital, Swanson said.

Two other people involved in the crash were transported to Hurley Medical Center in Flint with minor injuries and later released.

The Detroit man — who did not stop for the turning car — was not paying attention at the time of the crash, Swanson said.

“We believe this incident was caused by distracted driving,” he noted. “There was no alcohol, no speed (involved).”

The sheriff’s office will present its findings to the Genesee County Prosecutor Office’s for review in the coming weeks upon completion of its investigation.

“I just ask that: one, you pray for the family of the 74-year-old gentleman who lost his life, but you also have conversations with your loved ones… It only takes one second to save someone’s life,” said Swanson.

The Michigan State Police, Clio Area Fire Department and Mt. Morris Township Police Department and Clio City Police Department assisted deputies at the scene.

Transportation Dept: Preparations in place for ‘immediate mass shipment’ of COVID-19 vaccines

The department said in a news release that it has developed “appropriate safety requirements for all potential hazards involved in shipping the vaccine, including standards for dry ice and lithium batteries used in cooling.” Private sector firms will collaborate with government agencies to move the drugs from the manufacturers to distribution hubs.

Load Error

Current plans involve delivering enough doses for about 40 million Americans through December and January, department officials told Reuters. The rollout of the vaccine will be prioritized, with the first doses going to health care workers. These workers could be given their first dosage within a day of Pfizer’s vaccine being granted emergency authorization by the Food and Drug Administration.

“The department has laid the groundwork for the safe transportation of the COVID-19 vaccine and is proud to support this historic endeavor,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in a statement.

In November, transportation officials conducted a trial run to test its capacity to rapidly ship deliveries of the drug in the space of a few weeks, Reuters reported.

The Transportation Department has also ensured flight crews will be able to fly uninterrupted and deal with additional cargo demand. United Airlines is set to distribute shipments of Pfizer’s vaccine through charter flights.

Pfizer and its partner on the vaccine, German firm BioNTech, received emergency authorization from the United Kingdom’s drug regulation body on Wednesday, becoming the first to issue such an authorization.

“Help is on its way,″ British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC. “We now have a vaccine. We’re the first country in the world to have one formally clinically authorized but, between now and then, we’ve got to hold on, we’ve got to hold our resolve.”
