CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Believe it or not, America’s oldest bike-maker actually has roots in the Grand Strand.

Oldest American bike manufacturer churning out cycles in Conway.

Worksman Cycles opened up shop in Conway in 2017, and the company originating in 1898 out of New York City is one of the country’s first when it comes to bicycles. The company’s president said he knew he wanted to move operations elsewhere, and Conway was the perfect place.

Now, 50 employees are churning bikes out to fill Christmas lists all over the world.

“We sent a whole container of these to New Zealand. That was a first for us,” said Wayne Sosin, president of Worksman Cycles. “One of the things we’re working on now that I’m so excited about is we’re working with the Salvation Army. They’re using one of our tricycles with a really large cabinet on it and they feel they can access the homeless populations and places that are harder to reach with trucks. So they’re going to ride into these homeless populations with tricycles and help these people by giving them food.”

At the facility, some workers paint tricycles headed to the Salvation Army using a spray powder and a 400-degree oven.

Worksman Cycles has also made a more local impact, such as a partnership with Vocational Rehabilitation in Conway. It’s hired several deaf and hard of hearing people through the partnership.

“I was the first deaf and hard of hearing person that the company hired, so once I got hired that really opened the door for deaf and hard of hearing people to want to come here and want to work,” said Xavier, one of the employees hired through the program.

Xavier also serves as an American Sign Language interpreter for co-workers.

Sosin said the company makes 15 different types of tricycles and bicycles. The company used to mainly makes tricycles for big companies like Boeing and Amazon, as a way of transportation across the warehouses and factories.

Due to the pandemic, Sosin said non-commercial bicycle sales have soared, and the company has a handful of styles to choose from.

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is under consideration to lead the department of transportation, people familiar with the matter say, a move that would enrage progressive activists if the former Illinois congressman and White House chief of staff in the Obama administration was ultimately nominated to join the President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet.

Rahm Emanuel addresses the audience during the Laver Cup Gala at the Navy Pier Ballroom on September 20, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.

Emanuel has expressed his interest in the post, telling allies that the nation’s infrastructure challenges are so dire that a person with experience from the executive and legislative branch would be an asset.

Emanuel is among a number of people who are expected to be considered for the job, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Biden has, so far, not named any cabinet posts during his presidential transition, which has been partially stalled by President Donald Trump fighting the results of the election and not conceding. Biden is not expected to make any announcements until after Thanksgiving.

But Biden has announced a host of top White House jobs, including Ron Klain, one of his most trusted campaign advisers, for chief of staff and both Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign manager, and Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana, a top adviser.

Emanuel’s record in Chicago could be a major hurdle to confirmation, particularly among progressives, considering the city’s crime rate and the police shooting of Laquan McDonald, which is the leading reason he did not seek a third term as mayor.

Emanuel has been a mainstay in Democratic politics for decades. He was a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton in in the 1990s, before he represented Illinois in the House from 2003 to 2009. He left the House in 2009 to become chief of staff to President Barack Obama, leaving in 2010 to successfully run for mayor.

Jeff Hauser, director of the Revolving Door Project at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, said that Biden picking Rahm “would cause at least half of the Democratic Party to jump off the Biden train.”

“From civil rights activists to economic progressives, it is hard to identify a group of grassroots activists whom Rahm hasn’t permanently alienated,” said Hauser.

This initial reaction is an example of how Biden’s Cabinet selections will be a jigsaw puzzle for the President-elect, where factoring the diversity of race, gender and ideology of all appointments will paint a broader picture of how Democrats, including progressives, view the Biden administration.

Biden has pledged he will nominate a Cabinet that reflects the diversity of the country.

Maine is the second-least expensive state in the US for car insurance. The average driver pays $667, about $200 less than the US national average, according to the Insurance Information Institute. But, that’s not to say that there aren’t still some ways to save if you’re willing to put in a few minutes of work.

Shopping around for coverage is the best way to make sure you’re getting the best price for you. The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Niger for the transportation and storage of petroleum products

Alhaji Garba Deen Muhammad, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the MoU was reached following bilateral agreements between President Muhammadu Buhari and President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Muhammad, stated that the MoU was signed by the Group Managing Director of  the  Nigerian  National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Malam Mele Kyari, and the Director General of SONIDEP, Mr Alio Toune.

He noted that MOU was signed under the supervision of the two countries’ Ministers of State for Petroleum, Çhief Timipre Sylva and Mr Foumakoye Gado, respectively, with the Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO), Dr Omar Farouk Ibrahim, in attendance.

He said talks had been ongoing between the two countries for over four months – through the NNPC and Niger Republic’s National Oil Company, Societe Nigerienne De Petrole (SONIDEP) – on petroleum products transportation and storage.

He explained that Niger Republic’s Soraz Refinery in Zinder, some 260 kilometers from the Nigerian border, has an installed refining capacity of 20,000 barrels per day.

According to him, the country’s total domestic requirement is about 5,000 barrels per day(BPD), thus leaving a huge surplus of about 15,000 bpd, mostly for export.

Speaking shortly after the MoU signing, Sylva expressed delight over the development, describing it as another huge step in developing trade relations between both countries.

“This is a major step forward. Niger Republic has some excess products which needs to be evacuated.

“Nigeria has the market for these products. Therefore, this is going to be a win-win relation for both countries.

“My hope is that this is going to be the beginning of deepening trade relations between Niger Republic and Nigeria.” he said.

Also commenting on the development, APPO Secretary General, Ibrahim, said he could not be happier with what he witnessed in terms of co-operation and collaboration between the two APPO member countries in the area of hydrocarbons.

“I want to commend the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Niger and their leadership for this milestone,” he said

Also, Kyari said the two countries have had long engagements in the last four to five months with a view to restoring the importation of petroleum products (excess production) from Niger into Nigeria.

“With this development, we hope to have a long-lasting and sustainable commercial framework to having a pipeline from the Soraz Refinery in Zinder (Niger) into the most proximate Nigerian city so that we can develop a depot.

“We are happy that we have reached that conclusion and our two ministers have endorsed this framework. We are also working on detailed MoU between our two companies so that we can continue the execution process immediately.”

The NNPC helmsman further noted that being the most experienced of the two oil companies, the NNPC

DETROIT — The U.S. government’s road safety agency is asking for public comment on how it should regulate safe deployment of self-driving vehicles.

Seeking public comment is an early step in drawing up possible regulations, but that process takes years and could be changed by the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden.

About 60 companies are already testing autonomous vehicles, some on public roadways without human backup drivers. One, Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo, is running a limited fully autonomous ride-hailing service in the Phoenix area.

So far the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has taken a voluntary approach to autonomous vehicles without standards and regulations. That has brought criticism from the National Transportation Safety Board and safety advocates for being too hands-off.

NHTSA said Thursday that it wants public input on a proposed regulation of autonomous vehicle sensors, how the vehicles detect other road users and infrastructure, how they plan routes and how they carry out that plan.

“This rulemaking will help address legitimate public concerns about safety, security and privacy without hampering innovation in the development of automated driving systems,” said Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, whose department includes NHTSA.

The agency says in documents that a new generation of motor vehicle safety standards should give manufacturers of vehicles, sensors, software and other autonomous vehicle technology “sufficient flexibility to change and improve without the need for frequent modifications to the regulations.”

Last year the NTSB blamed lax regulation in part for a 2018 crash involving an Uber autonomous test vehicle in which a pedestrian was killed.

“There’s no requirement. There’s no evaluation. There’s no real standards issued,” NTSB member Jennifer Homendy said at the time.

While NHTSA is looking at standards, it said in the proposed rulemaking documents that it will address unreasonable safety risks by using its existing defect-investigation and remediation powers. It said any regulations must be supported by data on safety needs without stifling innovation.

Jason Levine, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, called the request for public input strange because it comes at the end of the Trump administration. His organization petitioned NHTSA seeking autonomous vehicle regulations two years ago but heard nothing, he said.

The 60-day comment period, he said, will expire about the time of Biden’s scheduled inauguration, he said.

“The optimistic way of looking at it is the DOT (Department of Transportation) finally decided that a zero oversight of the self-driving car industry was a bad idea,” he said.
