Designing a Wide Voltage Range Automotive Circuit Protector

Ignition cranking during startup and load dumps during shutdown are common sources of voltage transients on an automotive supply line. These undervoltage (UV) and overvoltage (OV) transients can have significant magnitudes and will damage circuits that are not designed to operate during these extremes.

Specialized UV and OV protection devices have been developed to disconnect sensitive electronics from power supply transients. For example, protection devices can monitor the input supply using a window comparator and then validate that it is within range. Similarly, the supply voltage can be monitored by a resistive divider network connected to the UV and OV monitor pins. The window comparator output can then drive the gates of two N-channel MOSFETs that make or break the connection between the supply and the load. The window comparator can be designed with hysteresis on its monitor pins to improve noise immunity. Hysteresis can prevent false MOSFET on/off switching due to ripple or other high frequency oscillations on the supply line. For example, 25 mV of hysteresis is equivalent to 5% of the monitor pin thresholds and is common for UV and OV protection devices.

For their own protection or to reduce ignition loading, some automotive accessory circuits must be disconnected from the supply line during startup or shutdown. Due to the large transients involved, these circuits may require more hysteresis than the protection device can provide by itself. For such applications, the increased hysteresis requirement can be satisfied by matching the protection device with a supply monitor that has adjustable hysteresis. This article walks through how to design a wide voltage range automotive circuit protector.

Automotive UV/OV and Overcurrent Monitor with Circuit Protection

The architecture shown in Figure 1 protects electronics that are sensitive to undervoltage, overvoltage, and overcurrent transients present on an automotive supply. Figure 1 is an example of a wide voltage range automotive circuit protector. In this circuit, an LTC4368  from Analog Devices serves as the specialized UV and OV protection device and is responsible for connecting the load to the supply. The role of the window comparator is managed by an LTC2966.

The LTC2966 monitors reverse voltage, undervoltage, and overvoltage conditions. Monitoring thresholds and hysteresis levels are configured by the resistor networks on the INH and INL pins and the voltages on the RS1 and RS2 pins. OUTA is the UV window comparator output and OUTB is the OV window comparator output. The polarity of these outputs can be selected to be inverting or noninverting with respect to the inputs via the PSA and PSB pins. In Figure 1, they are configured to be noninverting. The OUTA and OUTB outputs from the LTC2966 are pulled up to the REF pin of the LTC2966 and are fed directly to the UV and OV pins of the LTC4368.

Woodland String Band member struck, killed by driver in Philadelphia’s Torresdale section

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a driver on Tuesday night in Philadelphia has been identified as a longtime mummer.

Police say 57-year-old Jim Trinacria was crossing the 11000 block of Knight’s Road in the city’s Torresdale section when he was hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Woodland String Band says Trinacria was a member for more than 40 years and they are devastated by the news of his death.

“We are shocked and devastated to learn of the sudden passing of Jim “Tricky” Trinacria. Jimmy was in string bands for over 40 years in the Uptown, Woodland, Greater Kensington, and Ferko String Bands and is in the WSB Hall of Fame,” the string band wrote on Facebook. “The officers and members of the Woodland String Band extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Joanne, his two daughters, family, friends, and any mummer that has marched with him. May he rest in peace.”

The driver who hit Trinacria did stay at the scene.

Further details surrounding the crash have not yet been revealed.

Sonic Automotive (SAH) Q1 Earnings Beat on EchoPark Strength – May 1, 2020

Sonic Automotive, Inc. (SAH Free Report) registered adjusted earnings per share of 40 cents in first-quarter 2020, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 20 cents. Higher sales from the used vehicle unit led to outperformance. Moreover, the bottom line was a penny higher than 39 cents per share reported in the year-ago quarter on the back of solid performance from the EchoPark segment.

However, total revenues in the reported quarter amounted to $2,308 million, down 3.4% from the prior-year period. Further, revenues missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,325 million.

Key Takeaways

During the reported quarter, revenues from the sale of new vehicles fell 10% year over year to $959.5 million. Gross profit decreased to $45.4 million from $53.8 million recorded in the year-ago period.

Revenues from the sale of total used vehicles rose 3.6% from the prior-year quarter to $850 million. The metric also topped the consensus mark of $794 million. Unit sales rose from 38,463 a year ago to 40,024 in the quarter under review. While gross profit decreased 13.2% year over year to $32.1 million, the metric topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $31.7 million.

In the quarter under review, the EchoPark segment recorded revenues of $331.7 million, reflecting a 33% uptick from the year-ago figure. Its stores sold 13,986 units, up 27% on a year-over-year basis. The segment registered income of $2.1 million, unchanged from the year ago-quarter.

Wholesale vehicle revenues decreased 11.4% on a year-over-year basis to $48.5 million. Nonetheless, gross loss narrowed from $1.26 million in the year-ago quarter to $157,000.

Revenues from parts, services and collision repair fell 2% year over year to $334.7 million. Gross profit decreased $157.9 million in the quarter under review from $163.2 million in the year-ago period.

Finance, insurance and other revenues rose 8.5% on a year-over-year basis to $115.3 million.

Selling, general and administrative expenses increased to $282.2 million from $247.1 million in the year-ago quarter.

The board of directors announced a quarterly dividend of 10 cents per share, which will be paid on Jul 15, 2020 to shareholders of record on Jun 15, 2020. As of Apr 28, Sonic Automotive — whose peers include Lithia Motors (LAD Free Report) , AutoNation (AN Free Report) and Group 1 Automotive (GPI Free Report) — had $304.0 million of cash and cash equivalents on hand.

Arbe Launches Automotive Grade Imaging Radar Processor Chip

Israeli startup Arbe, which has raised $55 million to date to develop a 4D imaging radar chipset, has today announced exclusively through EE Times that it has now launched its imaging radar processor chip as part of the chipset.

The company said this is the first automotive grade (AEC-Q100) dedicated imaging radar processing chip. The patented chip is capable of processing the raw data generated by 48 receiving channels and 48 transmitting channels, generating 30 frames per second, meeting automotive power constraints. This, it said, is higher than has ever been achieved on an automotive radar processing chip, while doing so in an “efficient and cost-effective manner”.

Additionally, the processor can scale from high resolution to ultra-high resolution and support over 100,000 detections per frame. According to Arbe, this ability to process such a high channel count provides unparalleled performance and safety to the automotive market. The radar processing chip enables the integration of smart detection algorithms, clustering, post processing and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) into the chip. The processor is designed in accordance with the international standard for functional safety (ISO 26262), and the processor enables ASIL B (Automotive Safety Integrity Level) qualification for the radar chip.

Arbe’s chipset produces detailed 4D images, separates, identifies, and tracks objects in high resolution in both azimuth and elevation on top of range and Doppler resolutions, in a long range and a wide field of view, and complemented by AI-based post-processing and SLAM.  The company has also developed its own proprietary millimeter wave automotive grade radar RFIC chipset that includes a transmitter chip with 24 output channels and a receiver chip with 12 input channels. Using a 22FDX FDSOI CMOS process, Arbe’s RF chipset is designed to support TD-MIMO with strong performance characteristics for channel isolation, noise and transmit power.

The CEO of Arbe, Kobi Marenko, said, “The amount of processing capabilities that we incorporated on our radar chipset solution is one that has never been achieved before in automotive radar. Our technology will bring the safety of vehicles to a new level with low power and low cost. We are excited to ship the processer chip to Tier 1 customers as part of a chipset solution that supports their next gen radar system developments.”

The company said its processor provides more processing power, low latency, and low power while cutting the cost to implement a safe radar solution. We delved into these performance claims a little more to qualify them.

First, on processing power, Arbe said the processor is capable of processing 30 Gbps of data, representing a virtual array of over 2300 virtual channels. Today most radars are processing less than  10% of the bandwidth and usually up to 12 virtual channels. With regard to the latency claim, Arbe said 30 fps provides real-time frames every 33 ms, which enables a maximum latency from the end of a point cloud frame until it is received at the main ECU of 34ms.

The Low or No Emission competitive program provides funding to state and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses as well as acquisition, construction, and leasing of required supporting facilities. Under the FAST Act, $55 million per year is available until fiscal year 2020.

All eligible expenses under the Low-No Program are attributable to compliance with the Clean Air Act and/or the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Therefore the Federal share of the cost of leasing or purchasing a transit bus is not to exceed 85 percent of the total transit bus cost. The federal share in the cost of leasing or acquiring low- or no-emission bus-related equipment and facilities is 90 percent of the net project cost.

Penske Automotive (SMP) Q1 Earnings In Line, Revenues Beat – May 8, 2020

Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (PAG Free Report) reported first-quarter 2020 adjusted earnings per share of 64 cents, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, the bottom line declined from $1.25 per share recorded in the year-ago quarter. The auto retailer posted revenues of $5,009.1 million, surpassing the consensus mark of $4,868 million. However, the top line declined from the year-ago level of $5,564 million. Heightened coronavirus woes, especially in March, resulted in weaker year-over-year earnings and revenues. 

The company’s gross profit decreased to $776.7 million from $851.5 million in the prior-year quarter. During the quarter under review, operating income fell 33% from the prior-year period to $106.4 million.

Same-store retail unit sales tanked 14.5% year over year to 104,870. Within the retail automotive segment, new-vehicle revenues fell 14.3% year over year to $1,863.5 million and used-vehicle revenues declined 11.3% to $1,597.6 million.

Segmental Details

Revenues in Retail Automotive slipped to $4,416.6 million from $5,091.2 million in the year-ago quarter. Gross profit of $678.1 million compared unfavorably with $761.5 million in first-quarter 2019. However, the metric topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $617 million.

In the quarter, revenues in the Retail Commercial Trucks segment increased to $491.4 million from $332.3 million in the year-ago period. Gross profit for the segment was $68.8 million, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $68 million. Further, it increased from the year-ago figure of $54.4 million in the quarter.

Revenues in the Commercial Vehicles Australia/Power Systems and Other declined to $101.1 million from $140.9 million in the prior-year quarter. Gross profit was $29.8 million compared with $35.6 million in the first quarter of 2019. The reported figure also missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $34.20 million.

Financial Position

Penske Automotive had cash and cash equivalents of $431.9 million as of Mar 31, 2020, up from $28.1 million on Dec 31, 2019. As of Mar 31, 2020, long-term debt amounted to $2,516.1 million, up from $2,257 million on Dec 31, 2019.

Share Repurchase

During the quarter under review, the company repurchased 890,195 shares for $29.4 million or an average of $33.06 per share. As of Mar 31, 2020, Penske Automotive had a share repurchase authorization of $170.6 million.

Actions Amid COVID-19

To counter the pandemic-led crisis, the company has enforced a variety of measures including company-wide hiring freeze, substantial cost cuts, staffing-level adjustments, postponement of $150 million in capex and negotiated rent deferrals at different locations for up to 90 days.

Additionally, executive and management compensation has been drastically slashed, including a 100% pay cut for the CEO and president during the crisis. The board of directors has also suspended cash compensation through September-end of this year.
